Though renal failure can be for multiple reasons, such as circulatory problems or toxinsThe truth is that the dog with the most common renal failure is the elderly dog. Usually, this is affected chronically due to kidney wear and other diseases such as hypertension or diabetes.

The good thing is that having two kidneys, in a dog with kidney failure the loss of renal functionality is usually compensated, although it must be supported by proper nutrition so as not to reach a point of no return in renal impairment.

Dog with kidney failure: consequences, diagnosis and treatment

A dog with kidney failure will have poorly concentrated urine, thirst and even weight lossWell, they often eat little. They may have other more severe symptoms, such as vomiting and ammonia breath, so it is sometimes confused with urinary infections with which it can be related.

Of course, the first thing to suspect of having a dog with kidney failure is to go to the veterinarian, who will give us the appropriate steps to follow, which begin with the proper diagnosis of the disease through blood tests.

Although fluid rehydration, dialysis or even transplants are options for renal failure, the truth is that in most cases in which we have a dog with renal insufficiency, the feeding of these animals should be changed to reduce pressure on the kidney.

Dog with renal insufficiency: recommended diet

Given the The diet is one of the most important phases to treat a dog with kidney failure, it is advisable to dedicate part of this text to make clear a series of guidelines to control the nutrition of the sick animal.

This diet should allow proper hydration, both through wet food and through water, and special care should be taken with minerals such as sodium and phosphorus, and nutritional elements such as proteins: all must be limited, although in the case of proteins they are more than necessary, so they must be of high quality.

As for commercial feed, there are several commercial houses, in many cases designed for elderly animals. Another option is to make homemade diets with the guidelines given to us by the veterinarian.

It's important pointing that You should never salt your food and should be low in phosphorus, so we should not offer liver, fish, cheese, dairy or legumes to our pet. Boiled rice and meat such as chicken can be a great choice as long as they are part of the diet our vet does, and even the egg: we look for quality proteins that allow the kidney to work.

It is important not to opt for non-formulated feed for this pathology: Many times the feed has poor quality proteins, which do not even come from meat and can greatly worsen the kidneys of the dog with kidney failure. Attending to the advice of professionals and the nutrition of our pet will allow it to live for many years even if its kidneys are compromised.
